“Error loading operating system” after Shadow Protect IT Edition restore

We have been using Shadow Protect IT edition for a number of months now to assist in hardware independent server migrations.   One thing that I came up against early in our testing was issues when rebooting into the recovered O/S.  Issues like not having a working bootloader,  “error loading operating system” etc.  At the time storage craft advised a couple of simple steps to avoid this issue.  It is interesting that while these steps have been recommended to me after EVERY migration, they are performed in a “secret” menu item that I always forget the keystrocks for.  So here they are!

  1. After restoring your volume but still in the Shadow Protect Windows PE environment, Press CTRL – SHFT – F12.  This enables the Command prompt menu option in the tools menu.  You will know it has worked when you get a smiley face in the system status tray.
  2. Open up the newly created Command Prompt from the tools menu.
  3. Run “chkdsk /f  C:”
  4. Once this has completed continue as normal.
