My experience upgrading to iOS 5.0 Beta 2 (from Beta 1)
I received an email today from Apple regarding the release of iOS 5.0 Beta 2 to developers so I rushed right out and downloaded the required files. The install went really easily up until the actual upgrade at which point it all went pear shaped.
The usual method for developers to upgrade to Beta versions of the iOS is to use Xcode organiser. Doing it this way on this occasion was NOT the way to go, as it left me with an iPad in DFU mode. ie, unable to turn the device on and left with a warning about being in recovery mode when plugged into a computer running iTunes.
Getting the new iOS ended up being realtively easy to do using iTunes however using these steps.
- Simply hold down the Option key (on a Mac, I think it’s ALT on a windows based machine) when pressing the restore button in itunes and instead of just re-installing the lastest publicly available version, you will be presented with a finder dialog box.
- Select your downloaded iOS 5.0 Beta 2 ipsw file, press ok and wait.
- The OS will be upgraded successfully and then allow you to do a restore of your latest backup.
Easy
NOTE : This method worked for me using the legitamate Apple release to Developers and is not intended as advise for those running non legit versions of the iOS release. I have no knowledge of the installation methods on so called hacked versions etc so do not bother asking about them.
Good Luck
